Taiwan's legislature has advanced four competing bills for funding drone acquisition plans to committee, marking the next stage in debate over how to expand the country's unmanned aerial capabilities. The Cabinet has proposed allocating nearly US$6.5 billion over five years to procure more than 200,000 drones. Alternative proposals have also been submitted by the Kuomintang, the Taiwan People's Party and an individual Democratic Progressive Party lawmaker.

Lawmakers in Taiwan have voted to advance competing drone budget bills to committee for review.

Last week, the Cabinet proposed spending close to $6.5 billion US dollars to acquire more than 200,000 drones over the next five years. The opposition Kuomintang and Taiwan People's Party submitted competing proposals, as did an individual lawmaker from the ruling Democratic People's Party. Three committees — foreign affairs and national defense, economic affairs, and finance — are set to review all four bills.
