Military Drills Focus on Defense of Port of Taipei

An armored convoy rolls through New Taipei, near one of Taiwan’s busiest ports. It’s all part of combat readiness drills near the Port of Taipei.

These exercises and the military’s decision to deploy its first dedicated drone squadron to the area in July demonstrate the port’s importance.

Chen Kuo-ming (EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, DEFENSE INTERNATIONAL):

The Port of Taipei is considered a critical target.

The military has a mission category known as "key target support."

It refers to defending important sites such as infrastructure, airports, ports and major transport routes.

The convoy seen today includes armored vehicles, mortar carriers and TOW anti-tank missile teams.

This shows the integration of infantry, armored units and even anti-armor capabilities and it’s the army’s most basic combat units.

Taipei port is critical to keeping Taiwan connected to the outside world and provides a direct water route to the capital through the Tamsui river.

It lies just over 20 kilometers away from the Presidential Office and legislature, making it a vital defensive location.

That’s why it has become a focal point of military preparations. Last year’s Han Kuang drills saw units practice repelling an invading force by erecting coastal defenses, mining waterways and deploying missiles.

And, Tuesday’s exercises are part of the defense ministry’s efforts to deter a possible "decapitation strike," a sudden attack on Taiwan’s leadership with the goal of quickly forcing a surrender. China’s military has reportedly practiced such strikes in recent years.

The units here today are only part of the troops tasked with protecting the port. Marines, coast guard units, and military police are also on call.

This port is the entry point to Taipei. The exercises here serve an important function, ensuring troops are familiar with local conditions and are well prepared for an emergency scenario in one of Taiwan's key defense hubs.
