Military Service Evasion in Taiwan
REPORTER:
Taiwan’s government is considering tougher penalties for evading military service, with officials proposing a minimum sentence of one year in prison.
The draft amendment would also increase penalties for those who deliberately delay service until they age out of conscription at 36. Officials say the proposal was prompted by high-profile cases involving entertainers accused of avoiding military service. The government says existing penalties have not been harsh enough to deter such behavior.
