A talk at Taiwan’s Contemporary Culture Lab examined the history and cultural legacy of sailor tattoos across US military bases in Asia. The discussion, titled Sailor Tattoos at U.S. Military Bases in Asia: From Hong Kong’s Fenwick Pier to Yokosuka, Japan, featured tattoo artist Jimmy Shy, photographer Chang Yu and historian Kuo Yen-po. Held as part of the C-LAB exhibition WE Are Becoming, the event explored how military presence, migration and subcultural spaces shaped tattoo traditions in the region, from Hong Kong’s harbor districts to Japan’s naval towns.
