Life in the Shadow of a Volcano
Beitou District, a suburb of Taipei and home to nearly 250,000 people, sits at the base of an active volcano group. Nearby Yangmingshan National Park is home to fumaroles, sulfur pits and other geothermal activity. The volcano group was long believed to be dormant, but scientists recently revealed that the volcano's magma chamber is much closer to the surface than previously thought. They are now increasing efforts to monitor the area in hopes of predicting what could be a devastating eruption.
