The Eurasian curlew migrates every winter from its breeding grounds in the Siberian plains to Taiwan's more temperate climate. It uses its distinctive downward-curving bill to pluck crabs and worms out of the mud and sand in the country's coastal wetlands. Thirty years ago, there were 3,000 curlews in Taiwan, but now only a few hundred can be found. Experts are now searching along the bird's vast migratory route, hoping to discover what is behind this dramatic decline.
