"I'm delighted to see a paper lion head. I can feel the warmth of the forerunner's craftsmanship." Traditional techniques have changed over time. In the past, lion heads were handmade. It takes at least three weeks to complete a paper lion head. Nowadays, they are all produced by machines, reducing production time, but also losing the warmth and emotion of human beings. Wu Deng-Hsing, the chief coach of the Chinese De Yi Tang Dragon and Phoenix Lion Dance Association in Beigang, Yunlin, has been a professional for 34 years. In the early days, the lion head was a part of the performing arts, but now it is completely integrated with religion. However, the demand is getting less and less. Master Wu Dengxing couldn't bear to let the traditional art disappear, so he set out to teach lion dance. He hopes that the traditional art of "lion head" could be passed on forever.
