As tech leaders gather in New Delhi for the AI Impact Summit, a quieter shift is happening in rural India. Women are powering global AI systems through data labeling and annotation, earning steady incomes and gaining financial independence. With about 200,000 annotators — roughly half of the world’s data-labeling workforce — India’s villages are becoming a key backbone of the AI industry, reshaping local livelihoods and social norms.
