The US and the EU have condemned a new jail sentence for Hong Kong democracy activist Joshua Wong.

He's been given ten more years after pleading guilty to conspiring with foreign forces under the territory's national security law. He's the only person to be prosecuted twice under it.

REPORTER:
Chair of the US House Select Committee on China John Moolenaar called Wong "a hero" and said the ruling was a "shameless display" of the Chinese Communist Party's disregard for human rights.

Separately, the EU says it "deplores" what it called a politically motivated sentence that showed a deterioration of the rule of law in Hong Kong.

Wong was set to be released from his first sentence in January.

International Community Condemns Hong Kong

==
The US and the EU have publicly condemned Hong Kong's sentencing of democracy activist Joshua Wong.

Wong, who was set to be released in January, was this week sentenced to an additional ten years in prison under the Beijing-imposed National Security Law, after he pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to collude with foreign forces.

REPORTER:
The EU released a statement that "deplores" the politically motivated sentence, which it said demonstrates a deterioration of the state of the rule of law in Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, Chair of the US House Select Committee on China John Moolenaar said Wong was "a hero" and called the ruling a "shameless display" of the Chinese Communist Party's disregard for human rights.

The Hong Kong government hit back at US criticism, labeling it "groundless attacks and smears which are obviously despicable political manipulation."
