Taiwan’s representative to the US, Alexander Yui, says he is confident the Trump administration will approve a stalled US$14 billion arms package for Taiwan. A White House official says US President Donald Trump will make a decision soon. Trump has previously described arms sales to Taiwan as a potential “negotiating chip” in talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Yui says the US has made clear there has been no change to its Taiwan policy. Trump and Xi are set to meet twice more at international events this year. Yui says Taiwan’s goal is to ensure it is “not on the menu.”
