Han in DC: Lack of Formal Diplomatic Partners 'Like We Can Date but Not Marry'

A delegation of Taiwanese lawmakers led by Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu met with members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in Washington, DC. They talked arms sales, Taiwan's self-defense capabilities and Taiwanese investment in the US. Han also congratulated the US on its 250th Independence Day.

Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu met with dozens of American lawmakers while leading a delegation in Washington on Wednesday, urging them to support Taiwan on the international stage.

 

Han Kuo-yu (LEGISLATIVE SPEAKER):  

Taiwan’s international situation leaves us feeling like we can date, but not marry.

 

Han was referring to Taiwan’s lack of a formal relationship with international partners.

 

Han's group included cross-party legislators and Taiwan’s top diplomat in the US. They met with Democratic senators including Jeanne Shaheen, a Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

 

In a statement, the committee urged the Trump administration to move forward on a $14 billion US dollar arms sale that is currently under review. They also met with dozens of House members, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

 

Han also congratulated the US on its 250th Independence Day anniversary and expressed his hopes for American lawmakers to support Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.
