Washington Urges US States To Strengthen Taiwan Ties, Resist Chinese Pressure

The US government has sent a letter to state governors, urging them to deepen ties with Taiwan and warning them against Chinese pressure.

 

In a letter released Wednesday by the US’ de facto embassy in Taiwan, the State Department and two other federal agencies encouraged states to deepen economic and cultural ties with Taiwan, particularly in agriculture, education, and trade. The letter also warned that Chinese officials may protest such engagement. It urged governors to contact the State Department if that happens.

US Cabinet Urges States to Strengthen Taiwan Relations

The American Institute in Taiwan on Wednesday shared a letter by US federal agencies encouraging state and local governments to deepen ties with Taiwan.

 

Top US Cabinet officials urged state governors to contact the State Department for assistance should they face pressure from Chinese officials. They said governors are well-positioned to deepen economic and cultural ties with Taiwan in ways that benefit their residents, in line with the Taiwan Relations Act. They also noted that Taiwan has agreed to a landmark 500 billion US dollar commitment to help boost US economic growth.
