The Mainland Affairs Council, which handles cross-strait relations, says it will investigate a county chief for taking part in China’s Straits Forum last week via a video message.

REPORTER:

We have made our position very clear multiple times. Both national and local level officials are prohibited from participating in the Straits Forum in any capacity. This time, we will have the interior ministry investigate under Article 33-1 of the [relevant cross-strait law].

Taitung County chief April Yao took part in the Straits Forum with a prerecorded video. In an interview with local media, Yao said the central government has failed to support farmers and find export markets for Taiwan’s produce. Taiwan’s government meanwhile says China’s Straits Forum is a platform for Beijing to promote unification by using agricultural exports as a political tool.
