Taipei Marks Tiananmen Anniversary As Memorials Are Banned in China
Heavy rain did not stop people from gathering in Taipei on June 4 to commemorate the 37th anniversary of China's Tiananmen Square crackdown. The annual memorial at Liberty Square featured speeches, performances and exhibits focused on preserving the memory of the 1989 pro-democracy movement and those killed during the military crackdown in Beijing. Attendees included Tiananmen survivors along with activists and advocacy groups from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Tibet. As public commemorations are banned in mainland China and Hong Kong, Taiwan has become one of the few places in the Chinese-speaking world where people can openly mark the anniversary.
