Strong winds from Typhoon Champi swept across Taiwan on Friday, disrupting transport and prompting widespread safety measures. Hundreds of flights were canceled, rail services faced interruptions and major roads on the east coast were closed, stranding travelers during an unexpected four-day holiday weekend. More than 2,000 residents in flood-prone mountain areas were evacuated as authorities warned of heavy rain and dangerous conditions. One person died after being swept out to sea off Xiaoliuqiu, while around 200 people were injured in storm-related incidents. President Lai Ching-te urged election candidates to prioritize public safety as the typhoon approached.
