Taiwanese Manga Artists Win Gold, Bronze at Tokyo Competition

Two Taiwanese manga artists have earned top honors at a major international competition in Tokyo. Eli Lin took gold and MurJi won bronze, both in the Wordless Manga category. The competition focuses on international artists and was organized by Japanese publishing giant Kadokawa. The publisher will help winners with serial distribution in Japan.

Two Taiwanese manga artists have taken top honors at a major international competition.

At an award ceremony in Tokyo, Eli Lin received a gold trophy, and MurJi got a bronze, both in the Wordless Manga category. The winners were first announced in May. The competition is organized by Japanese publishing giant Kadokawa and focuses on international artists. Kadokawa says it will help winners publish their work and reach wider audiences.

Many choose to set their stories in Taiwan.

Two Taiwanese manga artists have taken top honors at a major international contest in Tokyo.

Taiwanese artists, in terms of drawing skills and technique are basically on par with their Japanese counterparts. And when it comes to subject matter many choose to set their stories in Taiwan.

Organized by Japanese publishing giant Kadokawa, the contest drew nearly 2,000 entries from more than 100 countries.

Eli Lin took gold for Cells Within the Body, while MurJi won bronze for Hitokuji, in the Wordless Manga category.

Lin credited Taiwan's Ministry of Culture with helping her turn professional. Kadokawa said it will help the artists publish their work and reach wider audiences.
