Nantou Nears Victory in Cane Toad Eradication Effort
A yearslong campaign to wipe out invasive cane toads in Nantou is nearing success. Sightings have dropped from a peak of 35,000 toads caught in 2024 to just 54 adults found between January and June this year, with no juveniles detected. Researchers and volunteers say the population has shrunk dramatically, though the community remains vigilant against a resurgence, as a single female toad can lay up to 35,000 eggs a year.
