A troupe of Formosan rock macaques has made a splash during a welcoming event for new students at a Kaohsiung university.

The monkeys stole the spotlight, climbing around a dorm building. The National Sun Yat-sen University sits inside monkey habitat, and sightings aren’t unusual. Conservationists say it’s possible to live alongside these native monkeys, and important to learn how.

Lin Mei-yin (ASSOC. FOR COEXISTENCE WITH MACACA CYCLOPIS):
If they do get inside, just open the doors and windows
and give them a way to get out.
Then use a stick to hit the ground
so they don’t come near people.

They say keeping food out of reach and the use of netting are both key to keeping conflict with monkeys to a minimum.
