Jimmy Lai's Sentencing and the Death of Hong Kong's Rule of Law
Following a yearslong legal battle, a Hong Kong court sentenced Apple Daily founder and entrepreneur Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison for sedition; a conviction human rights groups have criticized for infringing on freedom of speech. In a sit-down interview with TaiwanPlus News, Mark Simon, Lai's long-time aide, tells reporter Chris Gorin that the solitary confinement and treatment make his sentence essentially a death sentence and Taiwan should view Lai's case as the “canary in the coal mine” for any future deals with Beijing.
