The late Lee Teng-hui stands as one of the most important figures in modern Taiwanese politics. Known as Taiwan's Mr. Democracy, or the Father of Democracy, his 12-year presidency spanned the end of authoritarianism and the transition to full democracy. In a new book, Hoover Institution research fellow Lin Hsiao-ting examines the Lee era, using newly declassified cables to evaluate Taiwan from local and international perspective.
