Views in Taiwan on the death penalty have remained consistent for many years: a large majority of people believe capital punishment is appropriate for certain crimes. Despite condemnation from international organizations, earlier this year Taiwan carried out its first execution since the Constitutional Court ruled the death penalty was constitutional but called for more protections for those on trial for death row. Taiwan legal scholar Jimmy Hsu of Academia Sinica joins this episode of Zoom In Zoom Out to discuss the current state of the death penalty and why support for it remains entrenched.
