Despite being an island nation, many Taiwanese are wary of the ocean and do not know how to swim. The ocean is seen as something to be feared instead of embraced. However, a group of brave swimmers and their instructors faced not only the ocean, but one of Taiwan’s most challenging swims: from the port of Keelung to Keelung Islet five kilometers off Taiwan’s main island. Their journey was captured in the documentary “Swim Against Fear” and on this episode of Zoom In Zoom Out, director Wayne Chien joins to share what he saw and what he captured as one group of children bravely dove into the sea.
