The story of professional baseball in Taiwan is one of immense passion and resilience. It began in 1990 with the founding of the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL), making Taiwan the third country in Asia to launch a professional circuit. However, this golden era was soon plagued by two devastating crises. First was a major series of game-fixing scandals, which severely eroded fan trust, caused teams to fold, and pushed the entire sport to its lowest point. Compounding the damage, Taiwan’s professional baseball industry fractured into the divisive Two-League Era following the establishment of the Taiwan Major League (TML), creating an unsustainable environment of internal conflict. Following fan advocacy and energy generated by international competition, the leagues finally merged in 2003. This consolidation marked the beginning of reconstruction. Through years of dedicated reform including measures to restore integrity and strengthen the commissioner's office, the CPBL slowly but surely began to emerge from the shadows of the past. Today, the CPBL has fully rebuilt its legacy and established itself as representative of the most popular sport in Taiwan. This success was driven by significant growth, including expansion to a modern six-team structure and booming fan attendance. The league's unique home-field operations and vibrant cheerleading culture also successfully captured a new generation of fans. By successfully navigating division, scandal, and loss, professional baseball in Taiwan has survived and triumphed.
