This year, Taiwan held its most ambitious and intensive defense drills ever. This year’s iteration of the Han Kuang exercise was the largest in its 40-year history in terms of size and duration. The country is telling the world it is not backing down in the face of a potential conflict with China. From deploying an unprecedented number of reservists and civilian volunteers to a massive display of newly acquired weapons, mostly from the U.S., the combined civilian and military drills are unscripted and intended to portray real-life scenarios. Beijing, as expected, downplayed Taipei’s annual drills as mere “posturing” and “self-deception”. Defense reporters Tingting Liu of TVBS and Jaime Ocon of TaiwanPlus sit down with host Andrew Ryan to share their insights and behind-the-scenes takeaways from their coverage of this year’s Han Kuang. Watch this episode of Correspondents, a show where we beyond the headlines with journalists in Taiwan and the Asia-Pacific region.
