The age-old practice of chicken castration is predominantly adopted by Hakka people for religious ceremonies, apparently due to a belief that castrated chickens are more fit for honoring the gods. Yang Siin-fug’s family has been castrating chickens for more than five decades, but this rare profession is at the end of the road with the changing times. Yang says that he will continue to pass down the dying art and honor the gods as long as young people are willing to learn it.
