Sumi is a Japanese expat who, despite cultural differences, has found a home in Taiwan through her love of dance. In this episode of "Cultural Crossings," Morris spends time getting to know her story. Sumi has lived in Taiwan for 10 years. Although she has found her community and is happy here, that wasn’t always the case. Morris visits some of her favorite places to learn about her initial impressions of Taiwan, how she adapted, and what she loves about her home now. First, Morris meets Sumi and her mother-in-law as they finish their trip to the market, where Sumi shares her thoughts on Taiwanese food compared to Japanese cuisine. She explains how she has grown to love Hakka cuisine and enjoys cooking with her family. While Sumi faced some cultural challenges, Morris also discovers the aspects of Taiwanese culture that made her feel more at home. When Sumi first moved to Taiwan, she struggled with Mandarin and instead chose to pursue her passion for dance. Morris joins Sumi for a training session with her hip-hop dance group, who became her best friends. In addition to dancing, Sumi also teaches Japanese online, using it as a creative way to bridge communication gaps. Together, Morris and Sumi even create a fun Japanese lesson.
