Tung Ping-an is the author of “Grandma’s Girlfriends,” an anthology of stories from lesbian elders. In the process of writing this book, he came to uncover his mother’s story. She grew up as part of the “Thirteen Taibao,” a group of sworn sisters known to bike between towns, attend temple festivals, and openly flirt with women. Reflecting on her memories helped Tung dissolve long-held resentments and choose what he calls reconciliation rather than forgiveness. After more than twenty years in the Taiwan Tongzhi Hotline community, he believes living authentically is made possible not by certainty, but by the presence of people who understand him. Friends who share his values and never ask him to hide or pretend. That’s what keeps everyone moving forward. “Between” Us follows twelve LGBTQ+ individuals living in Taiwan as they navigate love, family, self-understanding, and the quiet turns of everyday life.
