Rachel Hsu is the lead guitarist of PISCO, a rock band known for sporting their signature baseball jerseys at LGBTQ+ inclusive concerts across Taiwan. Growing up, she always knew she was a girl, but there was always uncertainty around expressing femininity. Music, especially rock, became her anchor. Bands like Placebo and artists like SUGIZO showed her new possibilities for identity and expression. A turning point came when her father attended her performance in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and gave her a heartfelt hug afterward—her first real sense of acceptance. In speaking up onstage, she uses her visibility to empower transgender folks like her. Rachel believes that if she—a self-described “very normal person”—can shine, then others can too. “Between” Us follows twelve LGBTQ+ individuals living in Taiwan as they navigate love, family, self-understanding, and the quiet turns of everyday life. Rather than defining anyone by labels, the series focuses on the experiences that shape them—the moments of doubt, the slow work of healing, the courage to speak honestly, and the relationships that make openness possible. Through intimate conversations and ordinary details, Between Us reveals how LGBTQ+ lives are built not only through struggle, but through connection, clarity, and the small decisions that lead a person toward who they wish to become. It is a portrait of resilience grounded in the simplicity of being seen.
