Carlos Chuang is a gay man living with Cerebral Palsy. Growing up, both parents and friends taught him to say yes and be grateful for anyone who would help. He rarely refused caregivers and often dealt with discomfort quietly. At least until college, when interacting with more people made him question why he couldn’t make his own decisions or simply say no. In learning to set boundaries, he came to advocate for himself and recognize his own needs. The gay dating scene favors what he calls, the ‘mainstream types,’ or those without flaws. Dating while disabled means that people question his desires, tell him to just focus on physical therapy, or cast him as a “life warrior” who inspires others. Carlos rejects these ideas, believing his mindset, social life, and independence are well suited to any previous or potential partner. He enjoys travel, food, adventure, outdoor activities like diving; and the joys found in the beauty of everyday life. “Between” Us follows twelve LGBTQ+ individuals living in Taiwan as they navigate love, family, self-understanding, and the quiet turns of everyday life. Rather than defining anyone by labels, the series focuses on the experiences that shape them—the moments of doubt, the slow work of healing, the courage to speak honestly, and the relationships that make openness possible. Through intimate conversations and ordinary details, Between Us reveals how LGBTQ+ lives are built not only through struggle, but through connection, clarity, and the small decisions that lead a person toward who they wish to become. It is a portrait of resilience grounded in the simplicity of being seen.
