The Small Big: Taiwan Pareas Atayal
Get to know a snake endemic to Taiwan, the pareas atayal, the first local snake species identified and named by Taiwanese researchers. A small, non-venous species, it is named after one of Taiwan’s indigenous peoples. Evolution has led pareas atayal to develop asymmetrical jaws allowing them to eat clockwise snails. But as a result, some snails have developed anti-clockwise shells, making it a challenge for the snake to eat.
