The black-winged kites used to migrate to Taiwan just for the winter, but were found in 1999 to have colonized the Aogu Wetlands in Chiayi County. They mostly prey on rodents and small birds, using farm plots as their hunting grounds. The size of black-winged kite population has grown over the decades, with the species now spreading across plains. Once winter migrants, they are now Taiwan’s “new immigrants.”
