Chiu Huo-jung was born in 1934 in Tainan and grew up in a family deeply involved in Beiguan music. His father was a Beiguan expert, and his mother was a famous player of the Xiaodan role in Luantan Opera. At the age of 14, Chiu joined a Zidi Opera troupe, where he learned to play the suona, as well as percussion instruments such as gongs, drums, and cymbals, which are associated with stage combat in Beiguan performance. Chiu has dedicated himself to traditional opera and music for more than 60 years. He has not only honored tradition through cataloging musical scores and filming performances for posterity, but also crafted his own unique style and take on the genre. He has thus made outstanding contributions to the promotion of Taiwanese cultural heritage.
