The Poetry of the Image: Film Artist, Huang Mingchuan
Huang Ming-chuan was born in 1955 in Chiayi. He is a pioneer of independent film production in Taiwan and helped propel the industry forward during difficult periods of Taiwanese history. Huang first opened a photography studio in New York in 1985, and then produced his debut film “Man From Island West” in 1988 after his return to Taiwan. The themes in his work are highly sensitive, unique, and touch on non-mainstream issues in society. Huang later turned to documentary film making, where he has explored key junctures in the history of contemporary art, reflected on local identity, and examined important societal issues. Over the course of his career, Huang has established himself in the art world as an important cross-disciplinary figure spanning the roles of artists, art critic, festival programmer, and film director.
