This Artist Preserves Austronesian Heritage-Art Attack S2 Ep. 5 Ep5
Austronesian artists weave the stories of their communities, preserving traditions and memories. This is the heart of everything Indigenous textile artist Aluaiy Kaumakan creates, as she tells the stories and preserves the traditions of her Paiwan community. Aluaiy Kaumakan is an Indigenous artist who centers her community. Her art is a testament to the lives of her ancestors and her Paiwan community. Through this artistic expression, she creates stories from tradition and preserves her culture. However, her work means more to the community as it helps them heal, grow, and rebuild from traumatic events together through a common thread of creating together. Aluaiy’s art honors her ancestors and creates a thread of creativity she hopes to pass on to her daughter to keep their Paiwan traditions alive. Does your family have an artwork or tradition you keep alive? Tell us about it in the comments! “Art Attack” is a series that shows the process and works of artists in Taiwan. Discover the vibrant work of these creatives, from dance to stone carving; there’s a wealth of talent to explore.
