China-Linked Hackers Target South Pacific Regional Organization

REPORTER:
The US says a regional organization in the South Pacific was hacked by groups with links to China.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the US Embassy in Fiji said the breaches happened between July and August, but it did not name the organization that got hacked.
That embassy covers the South Pacific countries of Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru and Tuvalu. Beijing said it was not aware of the case and that it opposes all hacking activities.
China-linked hackers compromised a regional organization's network based in Suva, Fiji, between July and August 2026, the US Embassy in Fiji said on Monday.
The embassy, which covers Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru and Tuvalu, informed the Fijian government and the affected organisation of the suspected breach and provided technical recommendations to help secure their networks.
- Hackers maintained access to the organisation's network over several days, the embassy said.
- The embassy did not identify the regional organisation by name.
- Earlier this month, the US Department of Justice seized seven internet domains to disrupt hackers that it accused of working with a Chinese IT firm, saying the domains were used to scan and hack US and foreign critical infrastructure.
- Chinese hackers have also been impersonating AI experts to steal passwords from people at think tanks, universities and law firms since at least 2025, cybersecurity company Proofpoint said earlier this month.
- The government of Fiji did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

REPORTER:
Hackers with links to China have compromised the network of a Fiji based Pacific regional organization. That’s according to the US Embassy in Fiji.
The US says the alleged network breaches happened between July and August, and that it alerted Fijian authorities. But the US has not named the regional organization it believes the hackers accessed. Chinese hacking has been a recent target of the US—with the Department of Justice seizing seven internet domains earlier in the month to disrupt hacking operations on critical infrastructure in several countries.
