Reuters has released satellite images showing Chinese construction in a disputed area of the South China Sea. Antelope Reef belongs to the Paracel islands, which are claimed by China and Vietnam as well as Taiwan. China has carried out land reclamation on the reef that now includes a runway and growing port facilities. These have prompted concerns that it could strengthen Beijing's military control over the area. Chinese state media has said the construction is for civilian purposes, such as weather forecasting and scientific research.
