Former Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji has died in Beijing at the age of 97. A key economic reformer under Jiang Zemin, Zhu helped drive China’s market reforms and accession to the World Trade Organization. He was also known for his tough warnings against Taiwan independence ahead of Taiwan’s 2000 presidential election, which some experts say helped secure victory for Chen Shui-bian of the Democratic Progressive Party. Zhu's death marks the passing of another member of the so-called third generation of Communist Party leaders who came of age during the Republic of China era.
