Ahead of the Lunar New Year, many people across Taiwan will be visiting temples to carry out rites believed to ensure a better year ahead. Taiwan is known for its diversity in not just culture but also religions. There are thousands of deities worshipped in many forms, but there is one – known as the Goddess of Mercy – who is seen as a unifying figure not only in Taiwan, but also its neighbouring countries.
