Russia's invasion of Ukraine has shone a spotlight on the struggle between democracies and authoritarian governments worldwide. What American political scientist Francis Fukuyama dubbed "the end of history" — the triumph of liberal democracy — now no longer seems certain. But there are many examples of formerly brutal authoritarian regimes that have gone on to democratize and succeed, including Taiwan's Kuomintang, or KMT.
