Taiwan’s navy plans to hire private companies to survey coastal areas that could be vulnerable to a potential Chinese invasion. For the first time, civilian ships and aircraft will collect raw data for the military to turn into 3D maps. The information could support anti-invasion planning.

Until now, surveys have been carried out by naval warships. This is the first time the military is tapping private companies to collect data. Under the plan, civilian ships and aircraft would gather raw data before navy planners integrate it into 3D maps. The information could help with anti-invasion strategies, like laying mines. The military has identified 14 to 20 so-called “red beaches” around the country -- areas with flat terrain, few obstacles, and proximity to cities or infrastructure.
