The Cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), signed in 2010, was the first major trade pact between Taiwan and China. It was controversial, with some Taiwanese arguing it could make the economy too dependent on China. In 2016, Taiwan shifted its strategy by diversifying its overseas markets.
