Taiwan’s Leopard Cat

The Leopard cat is the only surviving endemic cat species in Taiwan, with fewer than 500 left in the wild. Leopard cats don’t look all that different from a tabby housecat, except for a distinctive white patch behind their ears. Leopard cats live in low-elevation mountain areas in northern Taiwan’s Miaoli County, where there are abundant food sources. However, road accidents are a major threat to the animals. To protect the cats, residents built a tunnel that helps them cross a nearby river to safety.
