Taiwan's Mysterious Glass Owl Among the 13 species of owl in Taiwan, the eastern grass owl is probably the most mysterious. With its heart-shaped face resembling the profile of a cut apple, it is often called the flying apple – or monkey face owl. Grass owls are adapted for life on the ground, making them hard to spot. They are endemic to Taiwan but increasingly endangered due to habitat destruction. To protect the species, the government is promoting environmentally friendly agriculture and encouraging farmers to stop the use of chemical pesticides.
