Following Beijing’s crackdown on freedoms in Hong Kong and the start of mass arrests of pro-democracy activists in 2020, many dissidents, former councilors and activists began to flee the territory. Many decided to move to or claim asylum in the U.K., which shares many similarities with Hong Kong due to their colonial past. However, moving across continents brought about new challenges, including continued transnational repression from Beijing on activists in the U.K. On this episode of Zoom In Zoom Out, Michael Mo, a former District Council member and now postgraduate researcher shares his journey to the U.K. and how his life has changed since leaving Hong Kong.
