Taiwan used to have a booming coal industry in the 1960s, with more than 400 mines in operation at its peak. Yet as the country’s economy transitioned into manufacturing, many of these sites fell into disrepair. On this episode of Zoom In Zoom Out, TaiwanPlus reporter Reece Ayers sits down with Lin Fan-yu, who has worked as a designer for architectural firms in Taiwan for 10 years. We first zoom in to look at her recent project, Mineless, an old mining site now repurposed for the public, then zoom out to discuss the greater responsibility of preserving Taiwan’s nature and history.
