In this episode of DC Insiders, former U.S. National Security Advisor and U.N. Ambassador John Bolton shared with host Wenchi Yu his views on President Donald Trump’s foreign policy. Bolton attributed Trump's 2024 election victory largely to a backlash against the Biden administration's handling of the economy, particularly the issue of inflation, rather than a strong endorsement of Trump's foreign policy. He said the U.S. remains a center-right country and that voters primarily focused on domestic issues during the election. Bolton criticized Trump's dismantling of international institutions like USAID and the Agency for Global Media, arguing that "you don’t reform an organization by eliminating it" and expressed concern about Trump's misunderstanding of alliances and NATO’s importance. He said Trump's approach to foreign relations is based on personal connections, not grand strategy, and while Trump is critical of China for COVID-19's impact, he still seeks a "huge trade deal." Bolton advised Taiwan to significantly increase its defense spending to deter China, emphasizing that "American weakness, not strength, is provocative" and that Taiwan's security is vital for Trump's personal reputation, despite his lack of deep personal interest in Taiwan's national security.
