Myanmar national Ko Ko Naing Htut started his activism journey back in 1988 when he was part of pro-democracy student protests, also known as the 8888 Uprising, opposing one-party rule in Myanmar. The brutal military crackdown that ensued forced Naing to flee and take refuge in Taiwan in December of that year. Decades later, following the overthrow of Myanmar’s democratically elected government by a military coup on February 1, 2021, Naing is back out on the streets protesting. This time he’s rallying support for Myanmar’s people, here in Taiwan. In this CONNECTED feature, we hear from Naing and other Myanmar immigrants who have relocated to Taiwan to escape the instability and violence in their native country.
