How Transit Is Reshaping Taiwan’s Airport City
Taoyuan is one of Taiwan’s fastest-growing cities. But its rapid growth has created a challenge: How do you connect a city built around multiple urban centers? The answer may lie in one of Taiwan’s most ambitious transit and urban development plans. Home to the country’s main international airport and more than 2 million residents, Taoyuan is expanding its metro network while embracing Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) to shape how people live, work and move around the city. Can better transit do more than reduce travel times? Can it help tackle housing affordability, manage urban growth, improve connectivity and create a more livable city? Our producer Fred Shieh speaks with Chiang Nan-Chih, director-general of Taoyuan City’s Department of Urban Development, about the city’s long-term vision and the role transit could play in transforming Taiwan’s airport gateway.
