Acquitted Solomon Islands Official on China’s Growing Pacific Influence
China’s influence in the Solomon Islands was outpacing oversight. And Celsus Talifilu spoke out. In 2021, Talifilu was a political advisor to the late Malaita Province Premier Daniel Suidani. Following the Solomon Islands’ shift from diplomatic recognition of Taiwan to the PRC, Talifilu noticed a lack of transparency in interactions with China, including on large-scale infrastructure projects. He questioned whom these projects were really serving: the people of the Solomon Islands or China and its state-owned enterprises. In 2024, Suidani and Talifilu were charged for inciting civil unrest but acquitted the following year. Now Talifilu tells CONNECTED his side of the story – that China’s presence in the Solomon Islands is for political gain and how China’s ‘sign now, think later’ infrastructure financing could leave the next generation footing the bill.
