S. Leo Chiang on His Oscar-Nominated Film 'Island in Between'

“Island in Between” is a documentary short film nominated for this year's Academy Awards. It presents Taiwan's outlying island of Kinmen located just a few miles off the Chinese coast. Remnants of its Cold War past are still scattered around its otherwise picturesque beaches. We connected with S. Leo Chiang, the film’s director, to learn more about his personal journey. He shares what made him decide to start working on Taiwan stories at this point in his career, getting funding from the New York Times and becoming an Oscar nominee.
